The Paycheck Blueprint: A Three-Bucket System

Most budgets fail because they ask you to think. A three-bucket auto-split asks nothing of you after setup day.

The premise is simple: every paycheck is divided automatically into three accounts — Fixed, Flex, and Future. Fixed pays the bills you can't negotiate this month. Flex is the only money you allow yourself to spend freely. Future quietly invests itself in the background.

The trick is making the splits before the money ever lands in your main checking account. Once dollars sit somewhere you can see, you'll find reasons to use them. Out of sight is not just out of mind — it's out of the spending decision entirely.

Set the split once. Revisit it twice a year, on your birthday and on January 1st. Anything more often is fidgeting.
