How to Calculate Net Worth Honestly

Stop counting your car as an asset and your stock options as cash. Both will betray you.

By Nora Halberg · April 28, 2026 · 5 min read

Real net worth is what you'd have if you liquidated tomorrow at fair value, after taxes and friction. A car is depreciating consumption, not an asset. Unvested RSUs aren't yours yet. Home equity counts, but at conservative market value minus selling costs.

Recalculate quarterly. Watch the trendline, not the absolute number. A line that bends upward over three years means more than any single quarter's win.
